OpenAI once considered acquiring Cerebras, a company specializing in AI chipmaking, as revealed in recent legal documents from Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI. In 2017, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever suggested to CEO Sam Altman and Musk the possibility of purchasing Cerebras through Tesla, highlighting concerns about aligning Tesla’s shareholder interests with OpenAI’s mission. Despite initial discussions and due diligence, the acquisition did not materialize, and OpenAI set aside its chip ambitions for several years.
The potential acquisition of Cerebras could have provided OpenAI with a strategic advantage in developing in-house AI chips, reducing its reliance on Nvidia’s dominant market position. Although OpenAI abandoned plans for a network of chip manufacturing factories, it has shifted focus to building a team of chip designers and collaborating with Broadcom and TSMC to create a proprietary AI chip, expected by 2026. This move aligns with OpenAI’s goal to cut costs associated with training and running AI models, a crucial step as competitors like Google and Amazon have long been in the in-house chip market.
