OpenAI has announced a significant collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle to establish multiple data centers in the United States, under a venture named the Stargate Project. This initiative, which also involves Microsoft, Arm, and Nvidia as technology partners, is set to begin with a major data center in Texas. The project aims to secure American leadership in AI by committing an initial $100 billion, with plans to expand this investment to $500 billion over the next four years. The Stargate Project is expected to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and bolster national security by enhancing AI infrastructure.
OpenAI will take operational responsibility within the Stargate Project, while SoftBank will handle financial aspects, with Masayoshi Son serving as chairman. The venture highlights OpenAI’s strategic move to develop its own AI chips, collaborating with Broadcom and TSMC, potentially launching by 2026. This initiative aligns with OpenAI’s efforts to overcome compute capacity challenges, which have previously delayed product development.
