OpenAI is significantly enhancing its AI infrastructure capabilities through strategic agreements with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. These partnerships, announced after a high-profile meeting in Seoul involving OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and South Korean leaders, aim to produce DRAM wafers for the Stargate AI project and establish data centers in South Korea. The agreements will see Samsung and SK Hynix scaling their production to manufacture up to 900,000 high-bandwidth DRAM memory chips monthly, more than doubling the current industry capacity. This move is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to bolster its compute capacity for AI development.

The Stargate project, a collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, plans to invest $500 billion in building AI-dedicated data centers in the U.S. Recent developments include Nvidia’s commitment to invest up to $100 billion, granting OpenAI access to substantial compute capacity. Additionally, OpenAI is working with the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT to explore further data center opportunities outside Seoul and has secured a separate agreement with SK Telecom for AI infrastructure development. These initiatives underscore OpenAI’s aggressive expansion in AI compute capabilities, positioning the company at the forefront of AI innovation and infrastructure development.
