Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, has reported a significant improvement in user retention following Apple’s implementation of a new installation workflow in iOS 18.6. This update, which aligns with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, allows users to install alternative app marketplaces with fewer barriers. Previously, Epic Games experienced a 65% drop-off rate during the installation of its game store due to Apple’s complex process and warning screens. However, with the streamlined process introduced in iOS 18.6, this drop-off rate has decreased to 25%, bringing it closer to the rates observed on Windows and macOS platforms.
Despite these gains, Epic Games remains critical of Apple’s overarching policies, which include fees and restrictions that complicate the distribution of apps through non-Apple channels. The company continues to challenge Apple’s practices, drawing parallels to its lawsuit where it argued for greater user freedom similar to that on Mac computers. Epic Games also extends its criticism to Google, highlighting the cumbersome process for installing third-party app stores on Android devices. This ongoing battle underscores Epic Games’ commitment to advocating for more open and competitive digital marketplaces, as evidenced by recent legal developments where Google was ordered to allow third-party app stores on its Play Store.
