Discord has officially introduced its new virtual reward system, Orbs, following a successful trial phase. This initiative is designed to enhance user interaction with advertisements on the platform by offering rewards for completing specific tasks, known as Quests. Users can earn Orbs by engaging with ads related to products or games, which can then be exchanged for digital items in Discord’s Shop, including a three-day Nitro credit, unique profile badges, and avatar enhancements.

The beta testing phase for Orbs demonstrated significant user engagement, with millions of Orbs earned and redeemed. Notably, there was a substantial increase in first-time purchases within the Shop, with 79% of participants being new buyers. This development is part of Discord’s broader strategy to showcase its scalable advertising model, particularly as the company explores the possibility of an IPO. By simplifying the process for advertisers to launch Quest campaigns, Discord aims to attract more partners. Additionally, the Orbs system may serve as an incentive for non-subscribers to explore Nitro, although the impact on subscription rates remains unclear. Discord reported that 70% of Orbs participants were not Nitro members, highlighting the potential for future growth in this area.
