ClickHouse Emphasizes Memory-Safe PostgreSQL Extensions to Bolster Reliability

According to a recent LinkedIn post from ClickHouse, the company is focusing on memory safety and reliability in its ecosystem of PostgreSQL extensions written in C and C++. The post describes how differences between PostgreSQL’s memory model and C++ exception handling can create undefined behavior and process aborts if not carefully isolated.

The LinkedIn post highlights four specific extensions—pg_clickhouse, pg_re2, pg_chdb, and pg_stat_ch—each adopting a different strategy to limit the interaction between PostgreSQL internals and C++ code. These approaches range from removing C++ entirely in pg_clickhouse in favor of a new C library, to isolating C++ logic in wrapper files, helper executables, or background workers that can fail without forcing a full database restart.

The post also notes that this engineering review surfaced a reference ownership bug in pg_stat_ch, which has been addressed via a pull request and is prompting a move of more C++ dependencies into a helper process similar to pg_chdb. For investors, this focus on robustness and failure isolation suggests ClickHouse is investing in the reliability and safety of its integration stack with PostgreSQL, which may strengthen its credibility with large, risk-averse database users.

By emphasizing crash containment, error handling, and shared code paths across HTTP and binary drivers, the post suggests an effort to reduce operational risk and maintenance overhead in production deployments. If successful, these technical improvements could support higher adoption of ClickHouse-backed extensions in PostgreSQL environments, potentially reinforcing ClickHouse’s competitive positioning in analytics and hybrid database workloads.
