Anthropic has introduced a new API feature for its Claude AI models, enabling web search capabilities that allow developers to create applications with access to real-time information. This strategic move is part of Anthropic’s broader effort to enhance its AI offerings and attract a wider customer base. The web search functionality empowers developers to augment Claude’s existing knowledge with current data, eliminating the need for separate web search infrastructure. This development follows Anthropic’s recent launch of a tool that connects applications to Claude and an expanded ‘deep research’ feature that allows Claude to search enterprise accounts and websites.
The new API feature allows Claude to determine if a request would benefit from updated information, generate search queries, retrieve and analyze results, and provide answers with citations. Developers have the flexibility to customize search behavior and specify permissible domains for Claude’s searches. Pricing for this service begins at $10 per 1,000 searches, and it is compatible with Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku models. Additionally, Anthropic is integrating web search into Claude Code, a tool designed to assist developers with coding tasks by accessing current API documentation and technical resources. Claude Code remains in beta as a research preview, and these enhancements position Anthropic to better serve developers seeking comprehensive and up-to-date AI solutions.
