Perplexity AI, an AI startup backed by chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA), is rolling out a new program to share revenue with publishers whose content appears in its search results. This move comes as the company faces legal and public pressure from media organizations accusing it of using their work without fair compensation. According to Bloomberg, Perplexity has set aside $42.5 million for the program, which will be funded through Comet Plus, the paid subscription tied to the company’s Comet web browser.

Under this program, publishers will earn money in three ways: when their content shows up in Comet search results, when it drives traffic to their websites via the browser, and when it’s used by Comet’s AI assistant to help users complete tasks. Subscribers will pay $5 per month and publishers will receive 80% of that revenue, while Perplexity keeps 20%. CEO Aravind Srinivas says that the goal is to create a better internet through AI while ensuring publishers are fairly compensated for their work.
Unlike OpenAI and Google (GOOGL), which have signed large licensing deals, Perplexity is among the first to pay publishers based on how much their content is actually used by AI. Although the company hasn’t disclosed which publishers are already on board, Jessica Chan, who leads publisher partnerships at Perplexity, said discussions are ongoing with past partners. Separately, Perplexity made headlines earlier this month after reportedly making a $34.5 billion bid to acquire Google’s Chrome browser.
