The United Arab Emirates (UAE) portion of the Stargate, a massive $500 billion AI data center infrastructure project, is looking to finish out the first 200 megawatts of the 5-gigawatt capacity to be built in the country. G42, a key AI and cloud computing partner on the project in the country, disclosed the timeline at a tech conference in Dubai, Reuters reported.

Stargate is a multinational project spearheaded by AI startup firm OpenAI (PC:OPAIQ), in partnership with several U.S. heavyweights, including Nvidia (NVDA), Oracle (ORCL), and Cisco (CSCO). The project is being done in close collaboration with Japanese investment conglomerate SoftBank (SFTBF) and its majority-owned subsidiary, Arm Holdings (ARM), a British semiconductor design company.

Apart from its strong presence in the U.S., massive-scale AI data center infrastructure is also being built in other parts of the world, including in Norway — in partnership with Microsoft (MSFT)and in India.

Stargate UAE Not Fully Sealed?

The Stargate UAE project was announced during President Donald Trump’s visit to the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates, in May 2025. However, citing insider sources, another report by the news outlet noted that the deal to build massive AI data center infrastructure in the UAE has not been completely sealed due to security concerns relating to G42’s past ties to China.

G42, which is linked to the Emirate state, is one of the major funders of the Stargate UAE campus in the country. However, Talal Al Kaissi, G42’s acting group chief global affairs officer, has said the company continues to engage in discussions with U.S. companies on arrangements to build out the rest of the capacity.

Stargate Is ‘a Long-Term Vision’

During the launch of Stargate UAE, OpenAI called the project its “first international deployment”. The project was flagged off under the startup’s OpenAI for Countries, which is the AI firm’s global initiative to support governments to build their sovereign AI capacity in partnership with the U.S. government.

“Stargate represents our long-term vision for building frontier-scale compute capacity around the world in service of safe, secure, and broadly beneficial artificial general intelligence,” OpenAI said in a blog post published in May.
