OpenAI Teams Up with Bryan Cranston and Media Unions to Crack Down on Deepfakes

Microsoft-backed (MSFT) AI firm OpenAI (PC:OPAIQ) is teaming up with actor Bryan Cranston, media labor union SAG-AFTRA, and other major talent groups in order to stop the misuse of people’s voices and faces on its AI video tool, Sora. Cranston, who is known for “Breaking Bad” and “Malcolm in the Middle,” raised concerns after fake videos using his voice and image started showing up on the app. Nevertheless, he thanked OpenAI for improving its rules and said he hopes that all companies using this technology will respect people’s rights to control their own likeness.

OpenAI is also working with United Talent Agency (which represents Cranston), Creative Artists Agency, and the Association of Talent Agents. Notably, these groups had previously criticized OpenAI for using copyrighted material without permission. However, since launching Sora 2 on September 30, OpenAI has made changes to give creators more control.

For instance, on October 3, CEO Sam Altman updated the opt-out policy so that studios can better decide how their characters are used. As a result, Sora needs users to get permission before using someone’s voice or image, and OpenAI now says that it will quickly handle complaints. The company also supports the NO FAKES Act, which is a proposed U.S. law that would ban unauthorized AI versions of real people.
