OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Payments to India — Here’s Why It Matters

The pilot, announced today, will allow users to browse products and complete payments without leaving the chat, powered by India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The project is among the first to link AI with real-time payments, letting a chatbot handle purchases safely and securely.

The companies said the pilot will study how UPI can enable AI tools to “autonomously complete transactions on behalf of users” across different sectors. Notably, UPI already handles over 20 billion transactions a month, but this pilot could take it further by letting AI help users shop and pay online.

Banks and E-Commerce Partners Join the Pilot

India’s Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are the local banking partners for the project, while Bigbasket, the grocery platform owned by Tata Group, is among the first retailers to let customers shop through ChatGPT.

Using this system, users in India could soon ask ChatGPT to find a product, place an order, and complete the payment instantly, all within one conversation.

OpenAI said the goal is to make online shopping easier and safer by connecting AI with real-time payments. OpenAI’s international strategy head, Oliver Jay, said the goal is to “combine advanced AI with UPI” to bring simpler and safer digital payments to users.
