OpenAI Adds New Feauture to Help Users with Mental Health

Microsoft-backed OpenAI (MSFT) is adding a new mental health feature to ChatGPT that will remind people to take breaks during very long conversations with the AI. These reminders are part of the AI company’s plan to help users form healthier habits with the chatbot, which has sometimes been criticized for being too eager to keep talking. The reminders will appear as pop-up messages in the chat, and users will need to click or tap them to continue.

However, OpenAI’s move comes after serious concerns were raised in reports, including one from The New York Times. Indeed, those reports found that ChatGPT’s overly agreeable style sometimes led vulnerable users toward harmful thoughts, including suicidal ideas. As a result, OpenAI says that future updates will help the AI handle sensitive topics more carefully by encouraging users to be more reflective and showing pros and cons rather than giving direct answers.

This change comes after earlier issues with ChatGPT’s tone. In April, OpenAI had to reverse an update that made the AI overly friendly and, at times, annoying. By adding break reminders and improving how it responds to personal or emotional topics, the company hopes to create a safer and more balanced experience. These pauses may also give users extra time to check if the answers they are getting are accurate before continuing long conversations.
