Some may not be aware, but Mario—or rather, Super Mario of Nintendo (OTHEROTC:NTDOY)—is almost 40 years old. And Mario has been delivering value to Nintendo and its shareholders for that whole time. Sometimes more than others, certainly, and the latest news was enough to get investors back in the fold, with Nintendo up around 4% in Wednesday morning’s trading.
The latest installment of Mario gaming, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, is the first time we’ve seen Mario in gaming action for 10 years. And Mario fans welcomed him back with open arms, prompting sales of 4.3 million copies of the new game. That’s actually the best that any Mario title has ever done, reports noted, and that’s thanks in part to the massive user base for Nintendo gaming, as represented by the latest console, the Nintendo Switch. Currently, the Switch has a base of over 130 million units, including 6.84 million just acquired in the latest quarter.
It’s also worth noting that Mario had an impressive movie release, too, with the Super Mario Bros. Movie release. Nintendo may well have learned a thing or two from that because new reports suggest that another one of Nintendo’s biggest properties will be making its way to theaters as well with The Legend of Zelda. That report was tipped earlier from no less than Shigeru Miyamoto himself on X, formerly Twitter. The movie will be directed by Wes Ball, formerly of the “Maze Runner” trilogy. Miyamoto himself, meanwhile, will be producing, which bodes well as he produced the Mario movie.
