Government Shutdown Leaves Fed Flying Blind on Key Jobs Data

The first Friday of every month usually comes with a jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which includes nonfarm payrolls, the unemployment rate, and more. However, the government shutdown has resulted in the BLS, along with many other federal agencies, delaying the release of key data.

“This website is currently not being updated due to the suspension of Federal government services,” reads the BLS website. “The last update to the site was Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Updates to the site will start again when the Federal government resumes operations.”

Jobs Data Delayed as Unemployment Rate Hits 4.3%

This marks the first time since 2013 that the BLS hasn’t published the report on time, said Navy Federal Credit Union chief economist Heather Long. It also leaves the Fed in the dark on critical jobs data ahead of the October 28-29 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.

That comes amid the labor market showing warning signs. In August, the unemployment rate ticked higher by 0.1% to 4.3%, the highest level since October 2021. If the shutdown extends further, it could put the October 15 Consumer Price Index (CPI) release, a gauge of inflation, at risk as well.
