Following President Trump’s threat to tariff the EU at a 50% rate, France’s Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade, Laurent Saint-Martin, has said that the country maintains its stance of de-escalation but is “ready to respond,” in a translated post on X. France is a member of the 27-nation EU.

U.S-EU Tensions Rise amid 50% Tariff Threat
Saint-Martin added that the threat isn’t conducive to trade discussions between the U.S. and EU and that he would appear on a French TV channel to discuss the development in a few hours.
The U.S. has a $16.38 billion goods trade deficit with France, exporting $43.52 billion of goods and importing $59.90 billion of goods in 2024.
