Elon Musk Says ‘Grokipedia’ Launching in Two Weeks as His Answer to ‘Understanding the Universe’

Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has announced that Grokipedia, the latest project from his artificial intelligence company xAI, will roll out its first beta version in two weeks. Musk says the platform will serve as an alternative to Wikipedia, aiming to counter what he calls “falsehoods” and “half-truths” online.

Replying to a post on X, the social platform he owns, Musk confirmed that “version 0.1 early beta” of Grokipedia will debut soon. He described it as a key part of xAI’s larger mission, saying the service represents a “necessary step toward understanding the universe.”

While specific technical details remain limited, Musk has hinted that Grokipedia will operate as an open-source knowledge repository, allowing users to view, verify, and improve information using xAI’s advanced models.

How Grokipedia Was Born

The idea for Grokipedia reportedly came to life during Musk’s appearance at a September All-In Podcast summit. While explaining how his chatbot Grok scans sources such as Wikipedia entries, PDFs, and other documents to verify accuracy, co-host David Sacks suggested Musk should create a dedicated platform to host verified knowledge. Musk responded that he would “talk to the team” about it, and just weeks later, Grokipedia was officially announced.

Musk has said Grok’s technology will be at the core of Grokipedia, using AI to analyze claims and rewrite information to reflect what it deems complete or verified truth. He has positioned the platform as a counterweight to the crowd-sourced model of Wikipedia, which he argues is often prone to bias.

Musk’s Longstanding Feud with Wikipedia

Musk’s latest project is not just about technology, it’s also a continuation of his ongoing feud with Wikipedia. Over the years, he has repeatedly criticized the platform’s editorial practices, claiming it leans politically left and censors dissenting viewpoints.

In 2023, Musk made headlines for joking that he would donate $1 billion if the Wikimedia Foundation changed the site’s name to “Dikipedia,” a reference to what he called its “biased content.” The jab came amid a fundraising campaign that Musk accused of lacking transparency.

More recently, he echoed that criticism again after venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya called Wikipedia “a massive psyop,” with Musk responding that he “agreed.”

There Is Growing Scrutiny over Wikipedia’s Model

Wikipedia’s model of crowd-sourced editing has long faced criticism for reliability and bias. In a recent Tucker Carlson interview, co-founder Larry Sanger claimed that the site restricts certain academic sources and blocks editors with differing viewpoints.

“There is a whole army of administrators who are constantly blocking people that they have ideological disagreements with,” Sanger said, reigniting debates about neutrality and control over online knowledge.

Musk appears to be positioning Grokipedia as a direct response to such criticisms, promising an AI-driven approach that prioritizes transparency and verification over consensus editing.

xAI’s Has a Bigger Vision Beyond Knowledge

Beyond Grokipedia, Musk says xAI is expanding into other creative fields. He revealed that an xAI game studio is already in development and plans to release its first AI-generated game before the end of next year.

The company’s broader mission, Musk says, is to build AI tools that advance understanding, not just of data or technology, but of human knowledge itself.

If Grokipedia lives up to Musk’s ambitions, it could mark the beginning of a new chapter in how information is created, verified, and shared online. Whether it truly replaces Wikipedia or simply fuels another internet debate remains to be seen.
