The latest announcement is out from Aurizon Holdings ( (AU:AZJ) ).
Aurizon has secured a new long-term, performance-based coal haulage contract with BMA, the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, covering metallurgical coal from multiple Bowen Basin mines including Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Peak Downs, Saraji and Caval Ridge. The agreement, effective from 1 July 2028, allows annual volumes of up to 37 million tonnes for up to 12 years, replacing a 2015 contract and potentially extending the relationship to 2040.
Aurizon’s chief executive highlighted that close to a quarter of the coal the company hauls in Queensland is for BMA, underscoring the strategic importance of the renewed partnership. Combined with other recent customer recontracting, Aurizon has now recontracted more than 60 million tonnes of annual coal haulage since July 2025, reinforcing its competitive position and providing long-term volume visibility for investors and stakeholders in Australia’s mining supply chain.
