Can Vertical Aerospace’s Autonomous Defense Push Help EVTL Stock Catch Archer and Joby?

Can Vertical Aerospace’s Autonomous Defense Push Help EVTL Stock Catch Archer and Joby?
Story Highlights
  • Vertical Aerospace is partnering with Near Earth Autonomy to add autonomous capabilities to its Valo aircraft and pursue defense missions such as logistics and resupply.
  • EVTL stock is down about 70% in 2026, but Wall Street’s average price target of $12.17 implies roughly 680% upside from its latest closing price.

Vertical Aerospace (EVTL), a British eVTOL aerospace company that has attracted less investor attention than rivals Archer Aviation (ACHR) and Joby Aviation (JOBY), is expanding its push into defense and autonomous aviation through a new partnership with Near Earth Autonomy.

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding to add Near Earth’s autonomous flight technology to Vertical’s Valo aircraft. The agreement could strengthen Valo’s position as a platform for both commercial passenger travel and uncrewed defense missions.

Meanwhile, EVTL shares dropped 4.88% on Wednesday, closing at $1.56. Yesterday’s drop continues the stock’s difficult 2026, with the stock already down about 70% year to date.

Defense Could Open an Earlier Market for Valo

The partnership initially targets defense applications such as logistics, resupply, and distributed operations. Near Earth has more than a decade of experience developing autonomous systems for programs involving the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, including optionally piloted Black Hawk helicopters.

Vertical is also developing a hybrid-electric Valo variant that is expected to offer up to 1,000 miles of range and carry payloads of up to 1,100 kg over shorter distances. Those capabilities could make the aircraft more useful for defense and special missions than a conventional short-range air taxi would be.

“Defense is an increasingly important strategic market for Vertical, and this partnership moves us from ambition to capability,” CEO Stuart Simpson said.

What Does This Mean for EVTL Investors?

The agreement improves Vertical’s competitive position by reducing its reliance on the commercial air-taxi market alone. Defense demonstrations and government programs could potentially generate funding and customer interest before passenger services become commercially viable.

Still, the announcement is an early strategic step rather than a financial breakthrough. The companies did not disclose a defense contract, aircraft order, revenue commitment, or timetable for autonomous Valo flights. The deal also does not directly accelerate certification of the initial piloted passenger aircraft.

Is EVTL Stock a Good Buy?

Turning to the Street, Vertical Aerospace carries a Strong Buy consensus, based on five analysts issuing ratings in the past three months. The average EVTL stock price target is $12.17, implying about 680% upside from the current price.
