Berkshire’s more affordable Class B stock is up 3% this year, trailing the benchmark S&P 500 index’s 13% year-to-date gain. And the stock looks dirt cheap right now trading at just 1.4 times current book value, a multi-year low. As such, Wall Street expects Berkshire Hathaway to report that it ramped up its stock buybacks in the year’s second quarter.

Berkshire Chairman Warren Buffett has not hesitated to repurchase company shares when he feels they are cheap or have been underperforming the broader market. And Buffett’s successor as Berkshire’s CEO, Greg Abel, is under pressure to put some of the company’s massive $397.4 billion cash pile to work. Berkshire Hathaway has famously never paid a dividend to its shareholders.

Berkshire’s Recent Buybacks

With a current market capitalization of $1.1 trillion, Berkshire is likely capable of buying back $50 billion of its own stock annually, about double its record share repurchase from 2021. However, recent buybacks from the company haven’t come anywhere close to that level.

Earlier this year, Berkshire Hathaway began repurchasing its own shares for the first time since 2024. However, the company only bought back $234 million of its own shares during the year’s first quarter, disappointing analysts and investors who are calling on the company to do more with its cash horde.

Greg Abel, who became CEO of Berkshire at the start of 2026, announced that he purchased $15 million worth of company stock earlier this year, an amount equal to his annual salary.
