Anthropic, the artificial intelligence firm behind Claude AI, has introduced Indian rupee pricing for its subscription plans. The move is designed to make payments simpler for users in one of the company’s fastest-growing markets. Notably, India has become Anthropic’s second-largest market after the U.S., accounting for 5.8% of global Claude usage and a solid portion of its revenue.

Anthropic Ends Dollar-Only Billing for Claude Subscribers in India
Anthropic has begun offering local pricing for Claude Pro, Max, and Team subscriptions in India, allowing users to pay directly in Indian rupees instead of U.S. dollars. Previously, Indian customers had to subscribe in dollars to use Claude AI models. This meant paying currency conversion fees, bank markups, and an extra 18% Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST).
The new pricing model eliminates much of that complexity by adding applicable local taxes to the listed rates. Under the new pricing structure, Claude Pro starts at ₹2,000 (about $21) per month when billed annually. For users who need higher usage limits, Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 (around $125) per month. Meanwhile, Team plans start at ₹2,399 (about $25) per seat per month.
Local pricing has already started appearing for some users on Claude’s website and mobile apps. However, Anthropic has yet to introduce support for India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). For now, users can only pay with debit or credit cards, Apple’s (AAPL) App Store, or Google Play’s billing system.
India Emerges as a Strategic Market for Anthropic
Anthropic’s pricing rollout underscores India’s growing importance to the AI firm’s long-term growth strategy. It also places Anthropic in closer competition with AI firms like OpenAI, which also introduced Indian rupee pricing and UPI support for ChatGPT.
Meanwhile, India now accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it Anthropic’s second-largest market after the U.S. The growing user base presents a significant revenue stream and opportunity for the company as competition for AI users intensifies.
To strengthen its position in the country, Anthropic has steadily expanded its local presence. The company opened an office in Bengaluru earlier this year and appointed former Microsoft (MSFT) India executive Irina Ghose to lead its operations in the market. It has also partnered with Indian IT giants such as Infosys Ltd (INFY) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to support enterprise AI adoption.
Is Anthropic on the Stock Market?
Anthropic is a private company with no publicly traded stock available yet. However, the AI firm has already filed confidential draft IPO papers with the U.S. SEC and may be targeting a public listing between 2026 and 2027.
