AMD Stock Jumps as Code Leaks Point to New Ryzen APUs

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock was on the move Thursday after new code leaks provided hints at upcoming processors from the chipmaker. Tucked away in a new BIOS update were mentions of Strix Point, the codename for AMD’s new accelerated processing unit (APU). APUs differ from CPUs and GPUs in that they act as a middle ground between the two. These are largely found in laptops, where space and power are limited, but there are also desktop versions available to consumers.

While AMD hasn’t announced its Strix Point APUs, speculation about a release has been ongoing for months. That included estimates earlier this year that the new line of processors would launch in the fourth quarter of 2025. If that still holds true, it could help boost AMD stock even further in the last few months of the year.

It’s still unclear what platform the Strix Point APUs will operate on. Some leaks have claimed they will be Zen 5 processors that run on AMD’s AM5 platform. However, other leaks have stated that the new APUs will be a refresh of Zen 4, which still utilizes the AM5 platform. Other recent hardware leaks include details about possible Ryzen 7 9850X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 CPUs.

AMD Stock Movement Today

AMD stock was up 0.44% on Thursday, extending a 90.6% year-to-date rally. The shares have also gained 50.05% over the past 12 months. A majority of these gains are tied to the AI boom, which has increased demand for AMD’s server components. Even so, its consumer offerings are still a core part of its business.

Is AMD Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus rating for AMD is Moderate Buy, based on 29 Buy and 10 Hold ratings over the past three months. With that comes an average AMD stock price target of $249.92, representing a potential 8% upside for the shares.
