Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Suffers a Major Setback as EU Court Fines it $4.1 Billion

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) suffered a major setback on Wednesday as a Reuters report stated that a European Union (EU) court fined it $4.13 billion for using its Andriod mobile operating system to get a leg-up over its rivals in order to enforce its search engine’s dominance.

According to Reuters, this is a record fine imposed by the Court for an antitrust violation. The report stated that going back more than a decade, the antitrust enforcer in EU has imposed fines of €8.25 billion on Google for antitrust violations.

The report quoted the EU court as stating, “The General Court largely confirms the Commission’s decision that Google imposed unlawful restrictions on manufacturers of Android mobile devices and mobile network operators in order to consolidate the dominant position of its search engine.”

In response, Alphabet commented on the Court’s decision, “We are disappointed that the Court did not annul the decision in full. Android has created more choice for everyone, not less, and supports thousands of successful businesses in Europe and around the world.”
