Meta Platforms Doubles Down on AI With Massive Spend

Meta Platforms ( (META) ) has been popular among investors this week. Here is a recap of the key news on this stock.

Meta Platforms is moving aggressively to turn its social-media empire into a full-blown AI powerhouse, but the payoff is still a work in progress. The company’s Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger apps now reach 3.56 billion daily users, driving about $55 billion in quarterly ad revenue and funding an enormous AI buildout that already improves ad targeting and engagement.

That AI push comes with a heavy price tag. Meta Platforms spent roughly $72 billion in capex last year and plans to lift that to $125 billion–$145 billion in 2026, funnelling cash into data centers, custom AI chips, and a new Superintelligence Lab. Analysts see clear benefits to the ad business and early traction for consumer AI tools, but question how quickly Meta can convert these investments into broader, cloud-like revenue streams.

Wall Street remains broadly upbeat despite those concerns. Wedbush’s Ygal Arounian rates Meta Platforms Neutral, arguing that the company has yet to demonstrate a convincing return on AI spending outside advertising. Even so, the stock holds a Strong Buy consensus, with most analysts expecting double-digit upside as AI-driven engagement, subscription options, and potential infrastructure monetization begin to show through in earnings.

Meta Platforms also sits at the center of the wider AI trade. The company’s rapid model releases have helped it outpace Alphabet in some coding benchmarks, even as Google wrestles with delays to its Gemini 3.5 Pro launch. At the same time, rising AI capex at Meta is a boon for suppliers such as Broadcom, whose custom chips and networking solutions power many of the hyperscaler data centers underpinning Meta’s long-term AI ambitions.

For investors, the message is clear: Meta Platforms offers massive AI-enabled growth potential but demands patience. Its valuation still trades at a slight discount to peers, even as revenue growth and margins stay strong, prompting some analysts to upgrade the stock to Buy. The core debate is whether Meta’s huge AI bet will ultimately deliver cloud-style returns, or remain primarily an engine for ever-more-profitable digital advertising.
