The US Transportation Department said it was opening a probe into the Southwest Airlines operational mishaps in December, which resulted in 16,700 flight cancellations between December 21 and 29, Pete Muntean and Greg Wallace, wrote for CNN Business. According to the CNN report, a Department of Transportation spokesperson said, "DOT is in the initial phase of a rigorous and comprehensive investigation into Southwest Airlines’ holiday debacle that stranded millions."
