Hawaiian Electric blames Maui County for Lahaina fires, HCB reports

Hawaiian Electric Industries, in a court filing, alleges that failures by Maui County, and not the company, allowed wildfires to ravage Lahaina last August, killing 101 people and causing roughly $5B in damage, The Honolulu Civil Beat’s Stewart Yerton reports. The power company claims Maui failed to control vegetation and fumbled the response that allowed devastating fires to sweep through Lahaina in August in contrast to hundreds of lawsuits related to the fires filed so far which cast blame on HEI and its subsidiaries.
