"Box Office Battle" is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.
Disney’s (DIS) “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” won this weekend at the domestic box office with a $114M debut, making it the second-biggest opening weekend of the year behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with $146M. Overseas, the conclusion to Marvel’s trilogy of this crew of misfits opened to $168.1M for a global start of $282.1M.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Illumination and Universal’s (CMCSA) Nintendo (NTDOY) video game adaptation “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” fell to number 2 with $18.6M for a domestic cume of $518.2M. Behind it was Warner Bros. (WBD) “Evil Dead Rise” with another $5.7M for a domestic total of $54.1M. Lionsgate’s (LGF.B) “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” placed number 4 with another $3.4M in its sophomore weekend. Rounding out the top five, Screen Gems and Sony’s (SONY) “Love Again” grossed an estimated $2.4M in its debut outing.
