Box Office Battle: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ stays atop with $60.5M

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" places number 2 with another $13M

"Box Office Battle" is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.

Disney’s (DIS) “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” won this weekend at the domestic box office with another $60.5M debut, making it the best second-weekend hold for any sequel in the Marvel cinematic universe. The super hero movie also crossed the $200M mark domestically as it finished the weekend with a total of $213.2M. Overseas, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” earned another $91.9M for a foreign cume of $315.6M and $528.8M globally.

BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Illumination and Universal’s (CMCSA) Nintendo (NTDOY) video game adaptation “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” stayed at number 2 with $13M for a domestic cume of $536M and $1.21B globally. Behind it was “Book Club: The Next Chapter” with a $6.5M debut from 3,500 locations. Warner Bros. (WBD) “Evil Dead Rise” placed number 4 with $3.7M for a North American cume of $60.2M.  Rounding out the top five, Lionsgate’s (LGF.B) “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” grossed an estimated $2.5M.
