Vulcan Elements Secures ARPA-E Backing to Develop Next-Generation Magnet Materials

New updates have been reported about Vulcan Elements.

Vulcan Elements is deepening its strategic position in advanced magnetics through a multi-year ARPA-E–funded project led by Co-Founder and CTO Dr. Piotr Kulik to develop magnetic materials that could outperform today’s rare earth magnets. The three-year initiative, run in collaboration with the University of Central Florida and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will use exascale computing to discover, model, and validate high-performance magnets with lower rare earth dependency.

For Vulcan Elements, the program opens a path to commercialize breakthrough materials that could reshape its product portfolio, cost structure, and long-term competitive advantage in critical sectors such as defense, semiconductors, robotics, and EVs. As promising materials are identified, the company plans to translate research into scalable manufacturing, leveraging its Benson, North Carolina plant—now under construction and expected to become the largest rare earth magnet facility outside China—to secure a fully domestic supply chain.

The ARPA-E partnership positions Vulcan at the center of U.S. efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese magnet supply chains, aligning with the Department of Energy’s mandate to support disruptive energy and industrial technologies. CEO John Maslin framed the collaboration as a catalyst for “tectonic change” in magnetics and broader advanced manufacturing supply chains, underscoring Vulcan’s role as, to its knowledge, the only rare earth magnet producer fully decoupled from China across materials, technology, IP, and ownership.

Financially and strategically, success in this program could allow Vulcan Elements to offer magnets with superior performance and more flexible material inputs, potentially improving margins and lowering supply risk for customers in high-value applications. The Benson facility, designed for 10,000 metric tons of annual magnet output, will be central to scaling any new materials that emerge from the ARPA-E project, reinforcing Vulcan’s position as a core U.S. partner for national security, industrial competitiveness, and next-generation energy and digital infrastructure.
