OpenAI has introduced Sora, a new video generation tool, to subscribers of its ChatGPT Pro and Plus plans in select countries. Sora, currently in its Turbo version, allows users to create video clips ranging from 5 to 20 seconds in various resolutions and aspect ratios. This launch marks a significant step in OpenAI’s efforts to enhance creative tools for its users, although the service is not yet available in the European Union. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the challenges of launching new products in Europe due to regulatory reviews, which have previously delayed other features like Advanced Voice Mode.
Sora offers a range of features, including the ability to generate multiple video variations from text prompts or images and edit existing videos. The tool includes a Storyboard interface for creating video sequences and various editing options like Blend, Loop, and Re-cut. Access to Sora requires credits, with costs varying based on video resolution and duration. ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers receive monthly credits, with Pro users benefiting from higher limits and additional features such as unlimited low-priority videos. OpenAI’s decision to train its models on new Sora videos by default has raised privacy considerations, with users needing to adjust settings to opt-out. The launch of Sora reflects OpenAI’s strategic focus on expanding its AI capabilities in the creative domain, despite facing operational challenges in certain regions.
