OpenAI is grappling with significant compute capacity constraints, impacting its ability to release new AI products, according to CEO Sam Altman. During a Reddit AMA, Altman highlighted the complexity of current AI models and the tough decisions the company faces in allocating its limited compute resources. Reports indicate that OpenAI has been collaborating with Broadcom to develop an AI chip, expected by 2026, to address these infrastructure challenges. This shortage has delayed the rollout of features like the Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT, which was initially showcased with vision capabilities in April but has since been postponed.

The compute limitations have also affected other OpenAI projects, such as the next iteration of the DALL-E image generator and the Sora video-generating tool. Sora has encountered technical hurdles, making it less competitive against rivals like Luma and Runway, with processing times exceeding 10 minutes for a one-minute video. Despite these setbacks, OpenAI remains focused on enhancing its o1 series of reasoning models, with new features previewed at the DevDay conference in London. Altman assured that while significant releases are expected later this year, they will not include a new version labeled as GPT-5. The company continues to explore the possibility of allowing NSFW content in ChatGPT, emphasizing a commitment to treating adult users with maturity.
