Harness, the AI DevOps Platform™ Company, has released a pivotal study titled ‘The State of AI in Software Engineering 2025,’ which highlights the AI Velocity Paradox. This paradox reveals that while AI accelerates code creation, it simultaneously introduces bottlenecks in testing, deployment, and security, leading to increased risks, costs, and slower delivery times. The study, which surveyed 900 engineers and technical leaders across the US, UK, France, and Germany, found that 63% of organizations are shipping code faster with AI, yet 72% have experienced production incidents due to AI-generated code. Furthermore, nearly half of the leaders surveyed anticipate AI will heighten software vulnerabilities, with only 41% confident in their governance protocols to catch issues pre-production.

Trevor Stuart, SVP and GM at Harness, emphasized the need for automation across the software delivery lifecycle to harness AI’s full potential. He noted that without such automation, productivity gains at the coding stage are negated by downstream inefficiencies, resulting in more bugs, higher cloud costs, and increased security exposure. The report underscores the necessity for organizations to rebalance AI investments downstream, focusing on automation maturity to convert AI-driven code velocity into business velocity. Additionally, it highlights the risks of tool sprawl and ‘vibe coding,’ which amplify operational risks and governance challenges. Harness is actively working to address these issues by integrating AI throughout the delivery lifecycle, aiming to free developers from rework and enable a focus on innovation. This strategic move positions Harness as a leader in navigating the complexities of AI in software engineering, providing a comprehensive platform that mitigates risks and enhances productivity.
