Artificial intelligence (AI) firm OpenAI is now moving beyond software and into hardware devices built for programmers. At the AI Engineer World Fair event, the company unveiled a new tool called Codex Micro, a small macro keypad developed in partnership with Work Louder, a hardware design firm. The pad is designed to make coding easier for developers by acting as a physical control device.
OpenAI to Launch Hardware Control Device for Engineers
OpenAI is preparing to launch Codex Micro officially on July 15 with Work Louder. The AI company has been promoting the new hardware device on X social media, describing it as an “upgrade” to developers’ “favorite Codex shortcuts.”
Work Louder is known for building compact control devices that help users speed up repetitive computer tasks using physical buttons and dials. By working with them, OpenAI is using this same approach to enable engineers to perform coding tasks more easily and quickly using physical shortcuts.
Instead of just building new AI models, OpenAI is also improving how developers interact with its tools in their daily work. Early teaser videos of Codex Micro have already gained strong attention online, showing clear interest from the global coding community.
OpenAI has said that Codex Micro is designed to complement Codex, the firm’s AI-powered coding assistant. It was also specifically created for developers rather than everyday consumers.
OpenAI Stays Tight-Lipped as it Prepares for Launch
OpenAI has remained secretive about the specific details of its new hardware device. However, industry watchers on X suggest OpenAI’s Codex Micro may mirror Work Louder’s existing Creator Micro 2, a control pad that uses mechanical keys and knobs to speed up creative work.
For years, similar devices have been popular among designers and video editors because they make repetitive tasks faster and easier. Now, however, that same concept is being extended into software development.
Meanwhile, details about Codex Micro’s pricing and OS compatibility have not been released either. OpenAI has also not made any public disclosure on the device’s broader capabilities for developers. Despite these uncertainties, the upcoming launch marks a key milestone for OpenAI as it enters the developer hardware market.
Can You Directly Invest in OpenAI?
OpenAI is still a privately held AI firm, meaning it does not yet have publicly traded stock for people to invest in. However, the AI firm is planning a public listing, with reports suggesting a 2026 or 2027 timeline. Ahead of OpenAI’s planned IPO, prospective investors can find more performance and revenue details about the firm in the TipRanks Private Company Center.
