Nvidia (NVDA) stock was down 2.96% on Monday, even after the company announced the expansion of an open-source AI project. The chipmaker is expanding its CUDA-Q open-source platform with CUDA-Q Logical, an orchestration layer built to help researchers develop apps for fault-tolerant quantum computers.
According to Nvidia, the new tool lets teams model and manage parts of a quantum system. It also lets them switch between system options to find setups that work well with logical qubits. Nvidia says this could help cut the time needed to build useful quantum-GPU systems.
The need for this work comes from the limits of physical qubits. Fault-tolerant systems use logical qubits to help deal with errors and run larger tasks. Iceberg Quantum used CUDA-Q Logical to model its fault-tolerant design for Diraq’s qubits. The work showed that 1,000 logical qubits could be made with 150,000 physical qubits, about 10 times fewer than prior estimates.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory also used the tool to test qubits, run times and error-correction methods across many system designs. The lab cut its work time from about five months to three weeks. On that same note, Sandia National Laboratories is using CUDA-Q as part of QUOPS, a new open benchmark for tracking the gains made by quantum computing systems. Early tests cover QPUs from Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google, IBM (IBM) and Quantinuum (QNT).
“Quantum computing is maturing into an era of logical qubits,” said Timothy Costa, vice president and general manager of quantum at Nvidia. He said CUDA-Q Logical gives teams a way to test full systems across qubit types and designs. Nvidia also pointed to wider use of its quantum tools, such as NVQLink, Nvidia Ising and cuQuantum. CUDA-Q Logical is now open on GitHub, while QUOPS also has a public reference build.
Why Was Nvidia Stock Down Today?
Nvidia stock was down despite its quantum computing update today. That’s because there are currently heated arguments about AI advancements. Some AI company CEOs are calling for a slowdown in AI development. On the other hand, some company leaders and government officials want AI development to continue at a brisk pace.
Is Nvidia Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?
Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus rating for Nvidia is Strong Buy, based on 30 Buy ratings over the past three months. With that comes an average NVDA stock price target of $324.30, representing a potential 52.72% upside for the shares. (See NVDA Stock Forecast)
