Google Launches Gemini 4 Argon, Sets New Software Engineering Record
Story Highlights
  • Google launched Gemini 4 Argon and says the model set a new record on a real-world software engineering benchmark.
  • Argon has already freed hundreds of terabytes of memory inside Google data centers without additional hardware.
  • Wall Street rates GOOGL a Strong Buy with a $429.08 average price target.

Tech giant Google (GOOGL) has launched Gemini 4 Argon, its most advanced AI model yet, with major gains in software engineering and cybersecurity. Google says that Argon set a new record on a real-world software engineering benchmark and tied for first place on a cybersecurity test. It also beat OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 on the Vals Index, which tests AI performance on professional work in areas such as finance and law.

The results are a big change for Google after the company spent much of the past year focused on smaller Flash models that were cheaper and faster to run. Indeed, Gemini 4 puts Google back in the race for the most powerful end of the AI market.

That added capability is already being used inside Google. The company says that Argon has helped optimize memory use in its data centers, which freed hundreds of terabytes without requiring additional hardware. Google’s quantum computing researchers have also used the model.

In addition, Argon can handle much more information at once than previous Gemini models. Its context window is roughly 16 times larger, which makes it better suited for long software projects and other complicated tasks that require the model to keep track of large amounts of information.

Google Is Taking a Slower Approach to Argon’s Release

Nevertheless, Google is not making Argon widely available immediately. Instead, the company is starting with selected cybersecurity partners while it conducts additional safety testing. Google is also participating in a U.S. government program that evaluates advanced AI models before a wider release.

Cybersecurity is one area where Google says Argon improved significantly from Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber, which arrived earlier in September. Indeed, Argon tied OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and SpaceX’s (SPCX) Grok 4.7 on a cybersecurity benchmark. Meanwhile, Google says that Argon performed better at discovering software vulnerabilities than its previous models.

The model also scored ahead of GPT-6 Astra and Fable 5.1 on the Vals Index, which focuses on professional tasks rather than general chatbot questions. Google has not announced when Argon will become widely available to the public.

Are GOOGL Shares a Good Buy?
