Gasparino Takes a Dig at AMC Apes on Twitter

Story Highlights

Charles Gasparino expressed his negative thoughts about AMC “Apes” on Twitter. However, AMC fans are not the type to go out without a fight.

Charles Gasparino, a senior correspondent at FOX Business Network (FBN), took a dig at theater chain AMC Entertainment’s (AMC) “Apes,” and tweeted, “Let’s add up the times the $AMC Apes have been used by management without getting anything meaningful in return except a $12 stock heading lower.”

Apes are retail investors who are highly bullish on trending stocks that are heavily shorted.

AMC stock has lost 77.5% over the past year and is currently trading near $12, far from its 52-week high of $63.01. However, at the time of writing, AMC stock is trading up more than 2% in pre-market trading.

Meanwhile, Gasparino is irked by his belief that AMC insiders have used apes to profit from their insider trades while the apes themselves have paid higher prices for the stock.

“Since $AMC Apes financed the fortunes of the company insiders who sold their shares while the Apes were buying at much higher prices, the least these guys could do is give the Apes some free popcorn ha!” Gasparino quipped.

The meme stock frenzy has garnered massive hype for MOASS (mother of all short squeezes) bets on stocks such as AMC and video gaming company GameStop (GME). These stocks have become victims of naked short-selling techniques that use apes to pump up the prices of stocks on social media platforms like WallStreetBets and Reddit.

Nonetheless, supporters of AMC continue to counter Gasparino’s tweets with high positivity, hailing trends such as #AMCNOTLEAVING.

Moreover, now that Gasparino was rooting against it, AMC fans tweeted that they would add more to their AMC buckets should the stock fall further down.

Meanwhile, AMC Theaters’ slate is full and flowing with the best movie debuts since last year, following pandemic-related lockdowns. The theater chain is hitting record volumes of moviegoers with blockbuster hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion recently.
