Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock was down 0.63% on Thursday despite a new blog post that highlighted the use of its chips in space-based missions. The company has started sending samples of its new Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 chip to early customers. The chip comes in a new space-grade package built for missions that can last up to 15 years. AMD is testing it under the U.S. military’s MIL-PRF-38535 Class Y rules, which are the top level of quality and trust under the standard for space parts.
According to AMD, the new package uses a stronger organic base and a lidless design. These changes help limit heat and stress in space. The chip also uses space-grade capacitors with a proven flight record. AMD said the setup can support key missions in Earth orbit, lunar space, deep space, and other long trips. It is also aimed at human-rated missions where high levels of safety are needed.
The XQR Versal AI Core chip is made to handle work on board a spacecraft. It can run vector-based tasks while also offering more system logic, on-board memory, fast data links, and other advantages. At the same time, the package works with current Versal AI Core chips, which could make it easier for customers to use the new part in existing designs. AMD said the new samples mark a major step toward Class Y approval.
AMD expects flight-ready Class Y units to be available in the second half of 2027. For now, the new XQRVC1902 chips are sampling with early access customers.
Why Is AMD Stock Down Today
AMD stock was down 0.63% on Thursday despite its space chip news. However, this news has less to do with AMD’s announcement and more to do with the wider stock market. Instead, increased Treasury yields, a strong U.S. Dollar, and pressure on AI stocks help explain why AMD shares slipped today.
