TipRanks tracks and measures the performance of tens of thousands of financial experts, ranking them based on three key factors: success rate, average return, and statistical significance.
Success RateEach time an expert makes a recommendation or transaction, we track its success. Success is defined as a binary – win or lose – as the transaction either makes a profit or loss after a defined period. The default period is one year, or until the expert changes their recommendation. Ultimate users can adjust the settings to see an expert’s success rate when compared to the S&P 500 or the relevant sector ETF.
Average ReturnAverage return is an essential measurement of performance. For each rating or transaction an expert makes, we measure their return over a defined period. The default period is one year, or until the expert changes their recommendation. We then present the expert’s average return per transaction. Ultimate users can adjust the settings to see an expert’s average return over the S&P 500 or the relevant sector ETF.
Statistical SignificanceThe more recommendations or transactions an expert makes, the more statistically significant their performance results. For this reason, experts with a higher number of recommendations are more likely to be ranked higher if their success rate and average return are high. Or they may be ranked lower if their success rate and average return are low/ negative.
